An award-winning vibrant gastropub set just outside the hubbub of the city centre. With over 200 years of history in it's walls The Rising Sun feels like a charming rural pub with the bonus of the shops, cafes and bars of Truro (including our lively Irish sports bar, Fitzpatricks) just a short stroll down the hill.

OUR STORY

Over a decade ago, we stepped into a very dark, bare and unwelcoming shell of a pub but the instant Tom stepped foot into the bar, spotted a cosy bar and log burner his vision came alive; somewhere people could get together, share a drink next to the fire or at the bar, have a great time with friends, neighbours and visitors alike and enjoy an exquisite meal or delicious bar snacks. Above all a welcoming place for everyone to share a great time and if we’re lucky create a cherished memory that we can all be part of.

An overwhelming amount of work paled into insignificance against the excitement at what we thought could be created in this quirky building with a very long and interesting history. A lot of hard labour ensued to create our vision of showcasing the best qualities of a modern pub; seamlessly combining carefully and responsibly sourced, hyper seasonal sophisticated food and drink in a welcoming pub environment. Elegant, creative food alongside fantastic local beers, enigmatic wines and a great array of craft spirits all wrapped up in a warm, relaxing atmosphere.

Drive, determination, passion and charisma are words that come to mind when describing our Chef Patron Tom Hannon. Whether he’s on the stove in a busy service, pouring the perfect Guinness at the bar (he is part Irish after all), or just as likely fixing something, painting, organising the cellar, he is definitely not work shy - you name it he does it!) and he always has a smile and time for a chat.

From studying science and further maths Tom did a 180 when he discovered a love for food and cooking. A career in kitchens followed, training and working under the fantastic Michelin starred Chris Eden at The Driftwood Hotel (Chris Eden has since headed up Gidleigh Park and is now closer to home again at Watergate Bay). Loving classic French and British cooking using the best produce Tom thrived in the kitchen, however at the back of his mind he always loved the atmosphere and feeling of a great pub and couldn’t understand why you had to choose between exceptional food in a restaurant setting or “pub grub” if you wanted a relaxed cosy pub vibe. Why couldn’t you have the best of both? Tom set about challenging the perception of a pub whilst retaining the best bits; the great atmosphere, the sense of community where everyone is welcome and the wonderful spontaneity of people from all different walks of life chatting and sharing an hour or more together over a drink.

We love being able to share the atmosphere and sense of occasion and community, there seems to be fewer places in the community for people to get together so we champion keeping the Great British Pub alive and thriving.

We can't wait to welcome you,

Tom & Kate Hannon x
